Michael Lawrence


Michael Lawrence is an independent researcher.


He is presently working on: drug wars and political formation; state building and state formation; governance in areas of weak statehood; applications of complexity theory in the social sciences; innovative and unconventional security approaches; and the future of liberal peace building.

He holds an honours BA in peace and conflict studies from the University of Toronto and an MA in global governance from the Balsillie School of International Affairs, and was part of CIGI’s Security Sector Governance project.

Michael’s publications include the papers “Towards a Non-State Security Sector Reform Strategy” and “A Complex Systems Approach to the Drug War in Mexico: Resources, Violence and Order,” several op-eds and contributions to CIGI’s Rethinking Peacebuilding blog.
